Whilst this year the MotoGP Qatar round is unmistakeably different due to the switch to a night time running order, the Losail International Circuit has four previous premier class races to its name in daylight hours. The Middle East emirate has seen some exciting events in recent years, and also its fair share of controversy

2004 Carlos Checa took a rare pole position on the first visit to Qatar, before Sete Gibernau went on to take his last ever Grand Prix victory. Both Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi were relegated to the back of the grid, due to a team member for each rider tampering with their starting positions to provide them with a cleaner surface.

2005 Valentino Rossi won the MotoGP race to become the first Yamaha rider ever to take ten premier class victories in a single season.

2006 Valentino Rossi repeated his victory of 2005 to take his 54th Grand Prix win, equalling five-time World Champion Mick Doohan´s total. Casey Stoner earned pole position to become the second youngest rider ever to start from pole in the premier class, after Freddie Spencer.

A review of last year´s round is featured tomorrow on motogp.com.
