The only one of the three World Championship categories not to have a consistent leader from its first two sessions in Losail, the 250cc category opened for business with Hector Barbera on provisional pole for Sunday's night race.

The Pepe Team Toth Aprilia rider, with both his leathers and bike resplendent in the team's unique red and white spotted design, recorded a 1'59.739 lap of the Qatari circuit on his final run of the evening, just over a tenth of a second quicker than quarter litre class rookie Mattia Pasini.

Fastest in the early evening practice session, Mapfre Aspar's Alvaro Bautista was the third of three Aprilia riders on the provisional front row, which was rounded off by Metis Gilera's Marco Simoncelli.

After the first qualifying session of the 2008 season, row two of the 250cc grid lines up former 125cc rivals Thomas Luthi and Mika Kallio on their respective Aprilia and KTM machinery, joined by Aprilia mainstay and developer of the factory's RSA bike Alex Debon and second Metis Gilera rider Roberto Locatelli.
