Alvaro Bautista made his case for 250cc world title contention early at the Losail International circuit in Qatar, leading the first quarter litre session directly ahead of a string of expected championship rivals.

The Spaniard recorded a time of 200.240 at the Qatari circuit onboard his Aspar team Aprilia bike. Closest to matching his night time performance was countryman Hector Barbera, who was less than two tenths slower than Bautista with the same machinery.

The top six in the first free practice run also included the likes of Emmi-Caffe Lattes Thomas Luthi, Lotus Aprilias developer of the RSA Alex Debon, fastest 250cc rookie Mattia Pasini and Metis Gileras Marco Simoncelli, all within the same second as pacesetter Bautista.

Also at the business end of the timesheet albeit slightly off the first sextets pace- were the 250cc class three KTM riders. Hiroshi Aoyama was the quickest of the trio despite a technical problem, ahead of Repsol KTMs Julian Simon (who experienced a small tumble in the only crash of the session) and the Red Bull-supported Mika Kallio. Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten.
