Double 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzos rapid development on his Yamaha M1 in preseason meant that his strong performance on the first day of practice at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar was no great surprise, but continuing his good test pace on Friday at Losail was another positive step for the youngest rider on the 2008 MotoGP grid.

The MotoGP rookie put in several quick laps including a best time of 155.453 to conclude Friday as the second fastest rider at the desert track just 0.011 behind premier class title holder Casey Stoners pace-setting best.

It was pretty good and I felt comfortable with the bike, Lorenzo told motogp.com. Because of the wind and the conditions there is quite a bit of sand on the track as we haven´t been riding for a few days, but this will obviously improve as the weekend goes on.

I think I´ve already got completely used to riding at night so it´s almost like I don´t even realise we are going round under different conditions, he continued. We don´t know what it would be like if we were riding at night at other circuits but here, compared to last year, the pace is quicker.

Meanwhile, Lorenzos Fiat Yamaha team boss Daniele Romagnoli was delighted with his charges workout, enthusing: Today was a great day. We started with what we learned last week on the base set-up and so today was not a surprise, because last week was also very good. Jorge was really consistent and the pace is very good. We still have some things to improve but it´s going very well.

On the night riding taking place in Qatar Romagnoli added: We have more problems with the cool temperatures than with the lights. The riders didn´t complain about them and Jorge has got used to the new conditions quite quickly. It´s different for everybody. The temperatures just mean we have to work more on tyre selection.

With regard to the contribution tyre suppliers Michelin have made to Lorenzos success so far Romagnoli went on to say: We have some good data from last week so they brought some new stuff here and everything is based on what we gathered last time. Things are going quite well and we´ve found another little improvement here with Michelin.
