The 2008 MotoGP season was officially declared open on Thursday night, at a star-studded event at the Sharq Village & Spa hotel in Qatar's capital city of Doha.

All 18 MotoGP riders were present at what was a spectacular gala, and they and the other attendees were addressed by QMMF President Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Attiyah as he expressed his gratitude for Qatar's having been given the opportunity to hold the first ever night time Grand Prix.

The sentiment was reciprocated by FIM CCR President Claude Danis, who paid tribute to the work of the QMMF in bringing the ambitious project to fruition and also spoke on behalf of the FIM in thanking MotoGP rights holders Dorna's CEO –Mr. Carmelo Ezpeleta- for his forward thinking and openness to the possibility of such a unique event.

As at any good event, the 2008 season opening was only really complete when a commemorative cake had been cut by the MotoGP riders.
