Following the performance of Fiat Yamaha's brilliant new recruit Jorge Lorenzo in securing pole on his MotoGP debut in qualifying on Saturday evening, under the floodlights at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar, the double 250cc World Champion described his achievement as the stuff of dreams.

At 20 years of age Lorenzo is the youngest rider on the 2008 MotoGP grid but following some strong test and practice runs at Losail he delivered on his promise in style when it mattered, his 1'53.927 hot lap late in the session the first ever under the 1'54 mark at the desert circuit.

Lorenzo's success also echoed an achievement by one of his idols, as he became the first rider to take pole position at his maiden premier class Grand Prix since Max Biaggi moved up as 250cc champion in 1998 - the Italian going on to win that race at Suzuka.

"Only in my dreams did I think it would end up like that," said an elated Lorenzo. "It's something very special and today is a very special day for all the Yamaha team, because we have got three riders on the front row."

On Sunday's race he commented: "It's going to be very difficult because Stoner has good pace, but anyway, we will try! I will try to get the best possible start and then just enjoy it. We'll have to see what happens and how the bike and the tyres go."
