Saturday night showdown awaits MotoGP riders

The second evening of activity at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar on Saturday will see 2008s 18-strong MotoGP field do battle in their first qualifying session of the year as the action steps up a pace at round one of the new season.

Having had Fridays free practice sessions and last weeks test visit to get accustomed to the evening timetable, the cool temperatures and the unique floodlit conditions at Losail International the riders are ready to push each other to the limits as they fight for grid positions in their customary hour long qualifying practice, which commences at 10.55pm, local time.

Having looked strong throughout a long winter testing programme World Champion Casey Stoner has continued to produce fast times in practice at Qatar and will now aim to secure his first pole position of 2008 at the circuit where he announced his title aspirations in style with his maiden premier class victory last March. Last year Stoner started from pole on five occasions as he cruised to the MotoGP title.

Meanwhile new arrivals James Toseland and Jorge Lorenzo will be pushing hard for top spots if their practice times are anything to go by and of course the likes of MotoGP big guns Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi are sure to have some say in proceedings despite Pedrosas Friday crash into the Italian and Rossis low placement on Fridays timesheets.

In the smaller classes Hector Barbera in 250cc and Bradley Smith in 125cc will hope to defend their current provisional places at the head of their respective grids as their second qualifying runs take place either side of the main MotoGP event of the evening.

Prior to the commencement of the evenings riding the Losail floodlights will be turned on at approximately 5pm as dusk arrives and the hot, sunny afternoon fades away. The on-track action gets underway with the single cylinder riders participating in their second free practice session of the weekend as of 6pm local time.
