MotoGP rookie Jorge Lorenzo is the talk of his native Spain in the hangover period following the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar, drawing unanimous praise for his fantastic second place finish from pole position. The Fiat Yamaha rider exploded onto the scene in his maiden premier class race weekend, battling with some of the big names of MotoGP en route to a debut podium.

Renowned for his bombastic showmanship, the 20 year-old also demands a lot from himself, and matched his elation at such early MotoGP success with some calm analysis as to what prevented him from catching eventual racewinner Casey Stoner and completing the perfect debut.

"We nearly, nearly achieved perfection, because to win is the best you can do. In any case, second place is a wonderful thing. We have to thank Lady Luck, because we were fortunate not to have any crashes or problems, and secondly Yamaha and Michelin for their hard work," said the reigning 250cc World Champion after lifting his first trophy in the highest cylinder class.

"I also have to prepare better because -owing to the overtaking moves and the fact that it was my first race- I was a little bit nervous and my forearms cramped up. For that reason I wasn't able to ride as fast as at previous race simulations."

With second place in Qatar, Lorenzo also equalled rival Dani Pedrosa's debut in the premier class. The Repsol Honda rider took second in Jerez in the opening race of 2006, like Lorenzo following on from successive 250cc titles. Pedrosa later became one of the challengers for that year's MotoGP World Championship, and you can vote on whether Lorenzo will achieve the same success in this week's motogp.com survey.
