Casey Stoner's brilliant performance as he secured a plus five second win at the floodlit Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar on Sunday night, in the opening race of his title defence season, was a sensational statement of intent following his fourth place start on the Losail grid.

With Yamaha and Michelin both in good form at the desert circuit, Stoner came out on top on his Bridgestone-shod Desmosedici after an enthralling battle with Fiat Yamaha pair Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

"Casey is unique, there's nothing more to add to that. He didn't even make the smallest mistake today and once again he showed why the number one is on his bike," was the straightforward comment from Ducati's MotoGP Project Director Livio Suppo, in reaction to the Australian's 11th premier class GP triumph.

Stoner had a beaming smile on his face as he reflected on his Qatar success, enthusing: "That was a fantastic race and I really enjoyed it - it was like being back in 125s! The first few laps were really hectic, there were guys bashing fairings and I just tried to stay out of the way."

"When I got my chance to get through I took it and from there I just focused on setting my pace. Jorge rode brilliantly - it wasn't an easy race by any means, especially at the start
