Following his strong showings in preseason tests and his excellent performance in his first MotoGP qualifying session, James Toseland was a front runner at the historic Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar and finished a highly creditable sixth on his World Championship debut.

Showing no signs of nerves on the big stage and under the Losail floodlights, Toseland came home behind a group of riders with numerous World Championship titles between them and was still battling for fourth place against Italians Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso in the final lap.

After the race Toseland earned some special praise from his delighted Tech3 Yamaha boss Herve Poncharal and the English rider himself was clearly elated with the result at his maiden Grand Prix.

"I'm really happy to finish sixth in my first race. It was hard work but it was a great learning experience to be in the middle of a race situation with riders that I've only been out on a track with for qualifying and practice sessions."

"There are still better things to come from the Tech3 Yamaha machine and when we get the new engine that Rossi and (Jorge) Lorenzo are using, I'm confident that I can be even more competitive. The most important thing is that I've completed my first Grand Prix. To have finished in the top six is just a bonus."
