Unassuming Stoner ready for battle at round two

Following his second season-opening masterclass in successive years in Qatar, Casey Stoner is in a great position as he goes into the second Grand Prix of his title defence, this coming weekend in southern Spain.

Having stormed to World Championship glory last year, Stoner made a perfect start to the 2008 season with victory at Losail, having also enjoyed a strong winter testing programme, which included winning a BMW Z4 M Roadster in the 'qualifying lap' showdown in February's MotoGP Official Test in Jerez - also the scene of the second race of 2008.

Nonetheless, as anticipation builds ahead of the Gran Premio bwin.com de España, the reigning World Champion is also mindful that the Andalusian track is one of only four circuits where he was unable to manage a podium finish on his way to the title last season - and was the venue for a painful testing crash last November, in which he damaged his shoulder.

However, Stoner is not the sort of person who spends too much time reflecting on past results - be they good or bad - and he approaches the first European GP of the year in his typical pragmatic, unassuming manner.

`You could say that Jerez last year wasn't one of our best races, but winter testing went well there and with the general improvements we've made since last year I think we can be competitive at the weekend,´ says the Ducati Marlboro rider.

`We worked well with the Bridgestone technicians there during the tests and tried a lot of different types of tyre," he continues, "so we should be well prepared to pick the right one for the race.´

Contemplating where the main challenges could come from elsewhere in the MotoGP field, the brilliant young Australian comments: `There are a lot of riders who have started the season strongly, especially the rookies, amongst them riders who will want more of the same and riders racing at home, so they'll be very motivated. We just have to try and make sure we do our job well and then try to achieve the best result possible.´
