Puig analyses chances of Pedrosa home victory repeat

Despite Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden never having stepped onto the top step of the MotoGP podium at Jerez, the Repsol Honda garage will have one rider with a Southern Spanish premier class victory on his resume present in the form of Alberto Puig.

The former 500cc World Championship competitor now serves as a mentor for 2007 MotoGP runner-up Pedrosa, and has fond memories of the Circuito de Jerez from his days as a rider. Puig´s 1995 triumph was the crowning moment of his premier class career, and is notable as his only Grand Prix victory at the highest level of competition. Thirteen years on, the Spaniard is now hoping to guide his charge to his second consecutive home win this weekend.

`You never know what can happen; racing is strange,´ philosophised Puig this Tuesday at the Red Bull MotoGP Academy test in Catalunya. `The fact that it is a home track and one that we know well helps us out. It will be tough because the competition is strong, and we have to be aware of that, but of course we will try our best.

`If we can achieve our full potential, then the other riders will have to do the same in order to beat us,´ concluded Puig, who watched on as Pedrosa broke his home race jinx with victory at the final race of 2007 in Valencia.
