Rossi calms tyre fears and praises rookies

Chasing MotoGP victory number six at the Circuito de Jerez this weekend, Valentino Rossi has called for patience as he gets to grips with his new Bridgestone tyres at the Spanish circuit.

The five-time MotoGP World Champion has an illustrious history at the scene of the series´ second round of 2008, including victory last year in a masterclass of Grand Prix leadership. Rossi has also taken French tyre manufacturer Michelin´s first win of the season every year since 2001, a run that will come to an end this year as the Italian switches suppliers.

`It looks like our whole package is at the top this year. Yamaha have worked very well and the bike is competitive,´ said Rossi in the MotoGP press conference. `I need a bit of time to understand how to manage the Bridgestone combination with my M1 but I think we are going in a good direction.´

Rossi missed out on the podium in Qatar, and was edged out for fourth place by premier class newcomer Andrea Dovizioso. With his countryman alongside him to face the media on Thursday afternoon –as well as fellow debutant and Rossi´s team-mate, Jorge Lorenzo- the established MotoGP star was full of praise for the young blood entering the series.

`It´s positive to have all the good riders coming through from 250cc. Lorenzo and Dovizioso are very strong; the 800cc bikes are similar to the 250cc ones, so they are fast from the beginning,´ noted Rossi.

`I was more surprised by James (Toseland, Tech 3 Yamaha newcomer and production bike champion) in Qatar, because superbike riding is very different but he understood very quickly the style of the bike, and finished very close to me.´

On his chances of victory this weekend, the Fiat Yamaha rider is as optimistic as ever.

`Jerez is a fantastic track, a little bit old style with the long and high speed corners and it's always a pleasure to ride the bike at this track. I have great, great memories with good victories here, including last year. I think it will be possible to be competitive here.

`In Qatar we were struggling a little bit in the test, we weren't so fast. Here at the test we were a bit better although we still have a little bit of the problem we had in Qatar. We have had a lot of data to study and work on and I'm waiting to see how fast we are on Friday morning, but I think we can have a good weekend,´ he concluded.
