Debon on song in first 250cc Spanish session

Lotus Aprilia rider Alex Debon opened the 250cc practice proceedings in Jerez by taking the top spot in the quarter litre standings.

Lotus Aprilia rider Alex Debon opened the 250cc practice proceedings in Jerez by taking the top spot in the quarter litre standings. The Spaniard has participated in his home Grand Prix for the past two years despite being absent from full-time competition, and showed his familiarity with the circuit by clocking a 1´43.739 lap of the Circuito de Jerez.

Debon who finished fifth in last year´s race- has already gone round faster than his qualifying time from that Grand Prix, and is chasing a second consecutive pole position after a fine return in Qatar.

Trailing the 32 year-old most closely in the first session was Metis Gilera´s Marco Simoncelli, some four tenths slower than the Spanish pacesetter. The fastest man in preseason testing in Andalusia Red Bull KTM rider Mika Kallio- placed third, ahead of team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama.

A triumvirate of home riders and expected title challengers were hot on the heels of the KTM duo, namely Mapfre Aspar´s Alvaro Bautista, Qatar podium finisher Hector Barbera and Repsol KTM sophomore 250cc competitor Julian Simon. Behind them, Fabrizio Lai, Yuki Takahashi and Thomas Luthi completed the top ten.
