Alvaro Bautista headed an all-Spanish top three in the second 250cc free practice session, with one eye on a move up to the front row in this afternoon´s crucial qualifying session for the Gran Premio bwin.com de España.

The Mapfre Aspar Aprilia rider´s 1´43.379 lap of the Circuito de Jerez would have put him in second place on the quarter litre grid, behind provisional poleman Mika Kallio. In the session itself Bautista traded hot laps with Pepe Team Toth´s Hector Barbera, who eventually trailed his countryman by nearly three tenths of a second.

The factory Aprilia riders were out in force, with Alex Debon also having a strong final preparation for the afternoon qualifying run at his home track. Behind him, the fastest KTM machine at the track where the Austrian factory had dominated in preseason was that of Hiroshi Aoyama, the Japanese rider on the provisional front row alongside team-mate Kallio.

Metis Gilera´s Marco Simoncelli, 250cc sophomore Thomas Luthi, KTM contenders Kallio & Julian Simon, home rider Aleix Espargaro and Italian Fabrizio Lai completed the top ten in the morning session.
