The Ducati Desmosedici GP8 was not the dominant force that it has been in qualifying for the Gran Premio bwin.com de España, with both 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri experiencing difficulties.

Stoner qualified seventh on the grid for Sunday´s race, his lowest placing since his title-winning visit to Japan last season. The Australian has never finished on the podium at Jerez but, despite the Saturday afternoon setback, Ducati MotoGP Project Manager Livio Suppo does not believe that all is lost for the 22 year-old.

`The package doesn´t work perfectly, but I think that Casey can still have a good race,´ notes Suppo, who draws a parallel with Stoner´s triumph three weeks ago in Losail.

`He didn´t think that victory would be possible in Qatar, so we will see. Apparently (Jorge) Lorenzo is unbeatable here, with his race pace and qualifying times, so for sure tomorrow will be difficult.´

For Melandri, the session brought yet more frustration. The Italian had a lowside crash that halted any progress made earlier in the day, and finished the session in last place, nearly three seconds down on the pole position time.

`Marco crashed in the middle of the session, which didn´t help, and also he struggled with the setup of the bike,´ rued Suppo. `So it wasn´t the best day for him, but he´ll be back.´
