Bautista says engine to blame for Simoncelli collision

Alvaro Bautista refuses to blame Marco Simoncelli for the last lap incident that eliminated both riders from the 250cc podium, citing a mechanical problem with his Mapfre Aspar Aprilia RSA as the reason for their collision.

Simoncelli had been glued to Bautista´s rear wheel for nearly the entire duration of the race, and the scene had been set for a final lap battle between the duo for the quarter litre victory. Instead, Red Bull KTM´s Mika Kallio was the unexpected beneficiary of a spectacular coming together.

On the corner my bike stopped and Simoncelli went into me,´said the former 125cc World Champion after the race.

`It was a two horse race up until then, and I was really pushing because I knew that he could have overtaken me. It wasn´t his fault; the engine just seized up on the corner. It was a pity, because until then things were going well.´

In a touching moment of sportsmanship, the Aspar and Metis Gilera riders embraced in the gravel trap and forgave each other for the accident, as Mattia Pasini crossed the line in second to maintain his lead at the head of the quarter litre category.
