The forthcoming weekend's bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal will be the eleventh staging of the Portuguese GP, the first two editions of which were held in Spain, at Jarama in 1987 and Jerez in 1988.

Following a break after 1988, the Portuguese GP returned to the calendar in 2000 and for the first time was held in Portugal itself at the venue for this weekend's racing – Estoril.

This year's event will therefore be the ninth consecutive year that a Grand Prix has been held at Estoril, and in the accompanying video feature motogp.com looks back over some of the most exciting contests to have been hosted at the circuit.

In the first ever Estoril race in 2000 Gary McCoy had the honour of becoming first 500cc winner at the track, riding a Yamaha. The Australian crossed the line five seconds ahead of American Kenny Roberts (Suzuki) and Italian Valentino Rossi (Honda).

In 2002 Rossi won a race that was run in very wet conditions, after Sete Gibernau had led for most of the contest only to crash out with four laps to go.

Alex Barros dominated proceedings in 2005 by winning the race from pole position and setting the fastest lap as well as being fastest in every practice session. This was the last time that Barros stood on the top step of the podium in Grand Prix racing. The same year saw Casey Stoner win his first ever 250cc GP, while Mika Kallio took his first ever victory in the 125cc class.

The last year to feature in our video highlights piece, 2006 saw Toni Elias score his only MotoGP victory to date, beating Rossi by just 0.002 seconds to equal the closest ever recorded finish in the premier-class since the introduction of electronic timing.
