2007 race winner Alvaro Bautista was the fastest rider of the morning in Estoril, his time of 1´43.687 on a dry track eclipsing the wet laps put in by the MotoGP class. The Spaniard was the only participant to go round in under 1´44, on a morning of redemption for himself, premier class champion Casey Stoner and 125cc titlist Gabor Talmacsi after their respective disappointments in Jerez.

Trailing Bautista was Finnish KTM rider Mika Kallio, the winner and prime beneficiary of his rival´s last lap fall two weeks ago. The man with whom Bautista collided –Metis Gilera´s Marco Simoncelli- was fourth quickest, behind Kallio´s teammate Hiroshi Aoyama.

Alex Debon and Julian Simon increased the Spanish representation in the top six, with times around a second and a half slower than Bautista´s hot lap. Yuki Takahashi, Alex Baldolini, series leader Mattia Pasini and Hector Barbera completed the top ten.
