Poncharal grateful for Yamaha support

After Colin Edwards rode his updated Tech 3 Yamaha to the third fastest time on the opening day of free practice at Estoril his team boss Herve Poncharal thanked Yamaha for their support of his satellite MotoGP outfit.

After Colin Edwards rode his updated Tech 3 Yamaha to the third fastest time on the opening day of free practice at Estoril his team boss Herve Poncharal thanked Yamaha for their support of his satellite MotoGP outfit.

Riding the latest spec pneumatic valve YZR-M1 motor for the first time, Edwards shrugged off a disappointing morning session run in rapidly changing wet to dry conditions to figure prominently throughout the afternoon´s wind affected but dry session.

Only MotoGP World Championship leader Dani Pedrosa and 2007 Estoril winner Valentino Rossi bettered Edwards´ best lap of 1´38.632s, prompting Poncharal to say, `It´s a big plus so I want to say thanks to Yamaha for that. They have told us they will supply us as soon as possible and we knew that round three would be the earliest we could get it and we have it here.´

`Colin is riding as well as he has done in the first two rounds and he likes this track, so for sure it´s going to be an interesting weekend.´

Edwards´ team-mate, British rider James Toseland, ended an eventful day 13th quickest with a best time of 1´40.055, with no previous experience of the challenging Portuguese circuit.

On Toseland´s steep learning curve Poncharal commented, `For James this is the first track on the calendar that he´s never been on, so it´s a longer process. But I´m quite happy because he´s only one and a half seconds from the front.´
