Aspar meeting with Yamaha and Suzuki about 2009 MotoGP project

Jorge Martinez `Aspar´, team owner of the Mapfre Aspar 250cc and Bancaja Aspar 125cc teams, has confirmed that he is meeting with both Yamaha and Suzuki this weekend to discuss plans for entering a team in the premier class next year.

Jorge Martinez `Aspar´, team owner of the Mapfre Aspar 250cc and Bancaja Aspar 125cc teams, has confirmed that he is meeting with both Yamaha and Suzuki this weekend to discuss plans for entering a team in the premier class next year.

There has long been speculation that the Spanish former 125cc World Champion would expand his ambitious World Championship project into MotoGP and the Valencia-based team boss told motogp.com in Portugal, `I was working on it in Qatar and Jerez and I expect more meetings over the course of the weekend. My goal is to get into MotoGP in 2009, hopefully with two bikes.´

`That would be the best set-up but if there´s an option for a single bike, we´ll go for it as that would already be a great step for the team. I hope we can get things moving quickly, be it with Yamaha or Suzuki as moving into MotoGP is a very exciting prospect - so I hope we can confirm our project shortly.´

Commenting on rumours that he would take his highly rated current 250cc star Alvaro Bautista with him into MotoGP should the project go ahead, `Aspar´ said, `In my opinion, securing the technical side of things comes first at the moment, but obviously, I´d be glad to keep working with Alvaro Bautista for many years, having him in 250cc and eventually someday in MotoGP. I believe it´s a bit early to talk about riders, but hopefully we´ll get onto this when we secure a bike.´

With regard to the timescales involved in planning such a large step, `Aspar´ added, `It´s still early days and we won´t get a deal this weekend however I hope to leave Portugal having defined some more elements of what could be the final project. From there we can keep working and see if we can confirm something in China or at Montmelo. But once again, the idea for now is to see what options we have and see what direction we should follow so we can build on it and then think about potential riders.´
