With the added horsepower of the Yamaha pneumatic engine –new to the Tech 3 team this weekend- Colin Edwards took the early morning top spot in the premier class with a 1´37.598 lap in Portugal.

The American has enjoyed a new lease of life as part of the satellite outfit, and the arrival of the new motor has further rejuvenated his attempts at a successful season onboard the M1. Admitting yesterday that the team would `have problems´ if it were to rain, the relatively dry conditions of the morning helped Edwards develop a setting to use in this afternoon´s qualifying session…provided that the clouds hold firm.

Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, twice the poleman in the opening pair of races, was 7 hundredths of a second behind Edwards, with Nicky Hayden the fastest Honda rider in third. Lorenzo´s Fiat Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi was once again the fastest Bridgestone rider in the classification, with Michelin occupying seven of the top eight positions.

Currently the fastest rider of the weekend, Dani Pedrosa was fifth in the morning session, ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha´s James Toseland, JiR Team Scot rider Andrea Dovizioso and LCR Honda man Randy de Puniet. The two Bridgestone riders completing the top ten were John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen on their respective Kawasaki and Suzuki machinery.

Reigning World Champion Casey Stoner was eleventh quickest, still searching for the best settings for his Ducati Desmosedici GP8.
