Toni Elias will be walking wounded once more this morning, as a result of a curious mechanical problem in Friday´s second free practice session in Portugal.

The Spaniard was only able to complete ten laps of the Estoril Circuit yesterday afternoon before a new part of his Ducati Desmosedici GP8 Sat failed on the home straight. Whilst the session was aborted for the Alice Team rider, there were also more serious consequences of an incident shrouded in mystery.

`In the afternoon when the track was almost dry, a component of the clutch broke and hit my right foot. I didn't get injured, but it really hurts. The top part of the foot is now swollen and I will have to get some physiotherapy to reduce the pain in the shortest time possible,´ lamented Elias, who eventually finished last in the session and with little data to go on after a wet morning run.

As for the clutch breakage itself, the Alice Team garage are baffled as to why box fresh parts failed on their rider.

`We have to investigate on what happened. They all were new pieces and we have to understand why it broke,´ said Fabiano Sterlacchini, Technical director for the Ducati satellite outfit.

This piece of the clutch also hit the engine, which luckily is still ok, but has anyway made the bike lose some oil. The strange thing is that all the data received until the last lap were giving us the situation under control.´
