New engine gives Tech3 Yamaha an advantage

Colin Edwards and his Tech3 Yamaha Crew Chief Gary Reinders believe more good results are just around the corner.

With Colin Edwards finishing just off the podium at Estoril his Tech3 Yamaha Crew Chief Gary Reinders believes that the Texan can continue to harness the increased power of his new pneumatic valve engine and maintain his improved competitiveness in forthcoming rounds.

Making up for his DNF at round two in the south of Spain Edwards came home fourth in Portugal after qualifying fifth, making good use of his updated 800cc M1 prototype, much to the satisfaction of Reinders.

`I think from the hard work Colin has done this year and the hard work we did we expected this,´ said the Tech3 mechanic. `We expected top five like we did in Jerez, where there was a small mistake, but we are over that now and we are going to do even better over the next few races.´

On the step forward the team have taken courtesy of the new engine from the Yamaha factory, Reinders added, `It is especially useful for China because it is a very fast circuit. We think that what we have found with this engine, for China and Le Mans, will be a big advantage for the future.´

Speaking to motogp.com after Monday´s post-GP test, Edwards himself was in a jovial mood after surviving an near-crash early on, before finishing the day sixth on the timesheet.

`Maybe I shouldn´t have had that last beer last night!´ joked Edwards. `I started and felt good instantly but then on the third lap I had a huge, huge moment where the bike came around on me and kinda flipped me like a highside.´

`But I landed back on the bike and caught my chin, smashed the bubble (screen), destroyed the front of the bike, without even crashing! I also got a footpeg in the shin, so that was a good wake up call.´

Summing up his season so far, and looking ahead to round four, Edwards concluded, `We are the third race in, we have still got lots of time, but at least we´ve got a good direction on what to take to China, and where we want to go with development. I think there is a lot more to come from this team and with the Michelins and the Tech3 Yamaha its going to be a good year.´
