Bautista assesses 250cc title contenders after Estoril win

After bouncing back from his Jerez heartbreak with a tremendous victory at Estoril, Alvaro Bautista hopes his title effort is now back on track.

The perfect remedy for Alvaro Bautista following his nightmare last lap crash with Marco Simoncelli at round two in Spain was a superb seven second victory just over a week ago in Portugal - and the likeable Spanish rider has revealed just what that victory meant to him.

With a strong team of technical staff around him in the Mapfre Aspar pit-box, Bautista has big title hopes in 2008. But despite starting on the front row at each round so far he still has some ground to make up on current championship leader Mika Kallio of Red Bull KTM, his Jerez debacle costing him points which could have had him close to the Finn´s current tally of 57.

When asked to summarise what went through his mind after his Portuguese triumph, Bautista responded, `That we had finally won a race like we deserved to! I was just so happy to be back on the podium and to win in the manner that I did. In the previous two races I did a good job but things didn´t go my way, so it was a special win. We did a good job right up until the end.´

Commenting on the main contenders around him in the quarter litre category the Aprilia rider continued, `I always say I would just prefer to concentrate on my own work rather than think about everyone else. But the KTMs are going well and there are a lot of other riders with plenty of experience such as Alex Debon and Hector Barbera who are always towards the front.´

`Simoncelli is perhaps the surprise package of this season so far, but we will have to see how he develops as the year goes on. Mattia Pasini has also started very well. Now we are reaching the stage where we go to circuits where there has been no winter testing so we will see how the new boys do.´

`Anyway, I just want to focus on what I am doing myself and just try to improve on the results I got last year.´

250cc, 2008, Alvaro Bautista
