Gresini evaluates season so far

Fausto Gresini, team owner of the San Carlo Honda Gresini MotoGP outfit, has given motogp.com his analysis of the season so far after three rounds of the 2008 World Championship.

Although his San Carlo Honda Gresini team have not quite made the start to the season he was hoping for, the owner of the satellite Honda MotoGP outfit, Fausto Gresini, is optimistic about forthcoming improvements and clear about the objectives to be met.

The team´s new pairing of experienced Japanese competitor Shinya Nakano and exciting MotoGP rookie Alex de Angelis have not yet achieved the kind of results that former 125cc World Champion Gresini is hoping for - but he recognises the level of competition in the premier class this year and is hopeful of a step up in performances soon.

Having seen his now departed 2007 line-up of Marco Melandri and Toni Elias conclude last season fifth and 12th in the general standings respectively, Gresini was accustomed to regular top ten finishes – and he hopes that with Nakano ending up ninth and tenth at the last two rounds the 30 year-old is capable of achieving more.

De Angelis, meanwhile, crashed out at Qatar and some subsequent additional errors, plus a bout of illness in Portugal, mean he is yet to feature in the top ten, unlike some of his fellow rookies who have commenced their MotoGP careers in style.

Gresini admitted to motogp.com, `It has been a difficult start. We are not used to getting results like this, and in these first few races we have struggled too much. The competition is hard this year.´

On the specifics of both his riders the Italian team boss added, `The Nakano-Honda-Bridgestone package is getting better. Shinya is doing the right things, but we are looking for another step to become competitive. Alex is a rookie, with great qualities, but in these first few Grand Prix weekends he crashed too often and he has not show his full potential.´

Giving his perspective on the current overall status of the San Carlo Honda Gresini structure, Gresini explained, `Being a satellite team means that you can work with a lot of strong partners who are always in contact with HRC about bike development. Our bike is good, and although we need better top speed it is easy to ride.´

`Honda are working on new parts and we hope to have something to try for France, or perhaps in China.´

Casting his views outside his own pit-box and evaluating the current battle at the head of the standings, he noted, `At the beginning of this season it has been great to see three manufacturers at the top and the dawn of a new era of young riders.´

`Jorge Lorenzo is ready to fight for the title alongside Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso is also doing a great job. We hope see Alex in this group soon. Generally speaking it is really nice to see the youngsters in MotoGP. Now we have to consider Valentino as part of the `old guard´, which a few short years ago would have seemed unbelievable!´
