Italian heads perennial rival Bautista in Shanghai session

Continuing the battle that took centre stage in both Spain and Portugal, Marco Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista were once again duking it out in the opening 250cc practice session for the Pramac Grand Prix of China.

Metis Gilera rider Simoncelli clocked a time of 2´06.446 in the final seconds of the session, retaliating to Bautista´s late hot lap. The Mapfre Aspar man and 2007 podium finisher was 0.261 slower than his Italian rival, with Team Toth´s Hector Barbera the only other rider to go round in under 2´07.

Mattia Pasini bounced back from his double crash in the Estoril race to take fourth place in the session, ahead of Alex Debon in an all-Aprilia top five. The fastest KTM machine was that of series leader Mika Kallio, ahead of former 125cc rival Thomas Luthi, team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama, Spaniard Hector Faubel and former World Champion Manuel Poggiali in the top ten.

The first qualifying session for the quarter litre crew in Shanghai takes place at 3.10pm local time.
