Poncharal delighted with first Tech3 pole since 2002

Poncharal delighted with first Tech3 pole since 2002

Herve Poncharal was over the moon after his team´s first pole position since 2002 as Colin Edwards topped the grid in China.

Colin Edwards´ third career pole, secured with a 1´58.139 lap of Shanghai at the Pramac Grand Prix of China on Saturday, put Tech 3 Yamaha at the head of the grid for the first time since 2002, much to the obvious delight of team manager Herve Poncharal.

`It´s been too long and I hope I won´t be waiting for another six years,´ Poncharal told motogp.com. `The last pole position we had with Tech 3 was on a Yamaha-Michelin package with Olivier Jacque at Sachsenring in 2002 and Shinya Nakano was in second place. That was the last time a 2-stroke was on pole. It has been a really long time but I am happy to have done it again with Yamaha and Michelin.´

Explaining the steps that were taken to give Edwards a competitive package, Poncharal continued, `We´ve been working on the bike, chassis, suspension, engine, and Colin found it a lot better from Saturday morning. We know how good the Michelin qualifying tyre is and I think the Yamaha-Michelin package is working very well everywhere.´

`We thought China might be difficult but to be towards the front at the opening four rounds of the season means we should be good everywhere throughout the season.´

Edwards himself added, `Our bike is working really well this year and the Michelin qualifiers are fantastic. Just by looking at the qualifying results for the last four races you can see that the Michelin-Yamaha package is pretty hard to beat at the moment. So I have to say thanks to all the guys involved.´
