Debon laments early Shanghai crash

250cc rider believes maiden race victory was on the cards before fifth lap tumble.

Carrying out a different kind of recovery to that undertaken by close friend Jorge Lorenzo, Alex Debon came back from a crash in the opening laps of the Pramac Grand Prix of China to take fifth place in the Shanghai event.

The Lotus Aprilia rider started from eleventh on the grid and, without his qualifying setback and fifth lap crash, could have been challenging for the win. The comeback was made all the more impressive by the bike damage suffered in his fall, and the tricky conditions presented by the arrival of rain.

`It was one of my best wet races, which makes the crash that I had even more of a pity. I was going as fast as the leaders, and could have fought for victory,´ lamented Debon, who regularly recorded 2´17 laps on his battle back through the field in a performance on a par with race winner Mika Kallio.

`I barely had a footrest with which to support myself, and I had some braking problems,´ he added, reiterating the tough test given to him by one of the fastest tracks on the Grand Prix calendar. `I gritted my teeth and put myself back amongst the lead group.´

Debon now heads to more familiar territory on his full 250cc return, with a string of European races which should allow him to reap the benefit of his experience.

`I leave China very excited about the next few races in France, Italy and Catalunya. I hope that as of now we begin the championship afresh, and that the results reflect our goals more closely.´
