Earl Hayden gives latest on racing siblings´ fortunes

The head of one of the world´s most extensive motorcycle racing families, Earl Hayden has seen some difficult moments for his progeny in recent weeks.

Motorcycle racing´s most famous siblings, the Hayden clan have been experiencing a tough time of late. Whilst the most high profile of the fastest brothers on two wheels –2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden- has been busy chasing his first podium of 2008 for Repsol Honda, the two other male representatives of `Earls´s Yard´ in Owensboro Kentucky have both been sidelined with racing injuries.

Younger brother Roger Lee recently suffered a serious crash when competing in the AMA Superbike championship, fracturing both his pelvis and lower back in three places each and leading to the amputation of his left little finger. Finally returning home to rest up on April 28th, the youngest of the Hayden brethren is still in the frame for a repeat of MotoGP debut for Kawasaki with `Team Green´ at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix on July 20th.

Tommy Hayden, meanwhile, was also hospitalised after a crash Stateside, having collided with former 250cc rider Martin Cardenas in a Supersport race in Fontana. The condition of both his injured progeny was obviously of the highest concern to father Earl, who is a frequent attendee of MotoGP World Championship events and awaited further news from the Shanghai paddock.

`Both of the boys had some big crashes, and that did make things a bit more nervous here,´ said Earl in China. `Roger Lee is working really hard to get back in time for both planned wildcard appearances with Kawasaki´; Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. That´s his plan and I think it´s one reason that he is working as hard as he is.´

`To have two of my sons riding in the same race would be exciting for my family. It certainly was last year.´

Aside from the second generation two wheel stars, the Hayden family is also represented in the Red Bull AMA Rookies Cup through Earl´s great nephews, extending the roadracing tradition.

`They are my brother´s grandchildren; Hayden Gillim and Frankie Lee. Both are trying to move up the ladder after a long time in dirt track riding, and I think that they are doing really good,´ commented Earl, himself a former dirt track racer.
