Pasini plays up World Championship chances

Pasini plays up World Championship chances

Second in the 250cc World Championship standings, Polaris World rookie Mattia Pasini thinks that a title push is possible with a continuation of his fine results.

Cutting the gap between himself and 250cc series leader Mika Kallio to 17 points, Mattia Pasini continued his incredible rookie season at Le Mans with his fourth podium from five races. The Polaris World rider was third in the quarter litre clash after a high-intensity last lap battle with Marco Simoncelli, with whom he had set off in pursuit of the leading riders.

Like race winner Alex Debon, Pasini was running slick tyres in a risky move on a wet track. It was a gamble that paid off, as the track dried and the Italian set his sights on a rostrum finish.

`At the beginning of the race my choice of slicks didn´t help me too much, as the track was too wet to make use of them. My knee was hurting as well and I had to wait for it to warm up and the track to dry, so it was difficult,´ noted Pasini after the race.

`Both myself and Simoncelli had a good pace, and we caught up with the front group. On the last corner I tried to block his pass, but he pulled a good move on me. In any case, I was able to cut the gap between myself and Kallio and maintain second place, so I can´t wait for Mugello.´

Whilst most rookies are playing down their title hopes across the three World Championship classes, Pasini sees no reason why he can´t lift the title at the end of the year.

`I know that I can fight for the championship. Why not?´ concluded Pasini when assessing his title chances.
