Ajo praises consistent Di Meglio

Although Mike di Meglio´s superb victory on home soil at Le Mans came in his favoured rain-affected conditions, his team boss Aki Ajo insists the Frenchman is much more than a wet specialist.

The rain-interrupted Alice Grand Prix de France 125cc contest ended with home rider Mike di Meglio on the top step of the podium, making the most of the wet conditions he appears to enjoy so much, while several of his World Championship rivals crashed out in the Le Mans rain.

The result was Di Meglio´s first win since 2005 in Turkey and the first for the Ajo Motorsport team since 2003, when Mika Kallio´s replacement in the team, Andrea Ballerini, won in Australia ahead of fellow Ajo rider Masao Azuma in second, also in wet conditions.

Not only did the Di Meglio victory in the five lap 125cc restarted race send the home crowd into raptures in France, it also put the Derbi rider on top of the single cylinder class standings – following his consistent start to the season.

`Of course it is always very good to be on the podium,´ said Ajo Motorsport boss Aki Ajo. `We have been competing in Grands Prix for six years, I think we have been on the podium six times and it´s always so nice.´

`In the winter tests it looked like Mike would be very strong this year,´ continued the Finnish team manager. `Of course we also have the best possible material from the Piaggio Group, a Derbi factory bike, and I think if we work hard we have a chance to fight for the title.´

When asked whether Di Meglio is likely to maintain his current solid form in the quick-fire series of forthcoming European rounds, Ajo replied, `I´m quite confident. Although a lot of people think Mike is just a wet specialist he is also very strong in dry conditions. We are leading the championship now, so we are not looking for wins, just for points in every race, because that is what is important.´
