Smith checks out academy successors at Spanish Championship

Bradley Smith took in the action at Circuit de Catalunya last weekend, where two Red Bull MotoGP Academy riders competed in Spain´s national series.

The initial success story of the Red Bull MotoGP Academy, 125cc rider Bradley Smith went back to his roots last weekend as he paid a trip to the CEV Buckler Spanish Championship and two of the scheme´s current participants.

MotoGP´s own `Oxford Graduate´ was on-hand in the academy garage in Montmelo to catch up with fellow Briton Danny Kent and American teenager Cameron Beaubier, whose exploits at the Spanish track were detailed on Monday. The current Polaris World rider had many a successful race during his formative years in the national series, which has become a stepping stone of sorts to the World Championship.

`I have a lot of memories of the Spanish Championship, and also of the Red Bull MotoGP Academy,´ recalled Smith. `Now it´s good to see people coming up through the same project as I did; I also like watching the new talent so I know what to expect in the future!´

As far as the World Championship goes, Smith has experienced mixed fortunes since his switch from Repsol Honda to Polaris World. Three pole positions and two podiums are the positive points, but two DNFs and a sixteenth place have cast a shadow over the Briton´s opening five races.

`At the moment the season´s not been perfect, but it´s not been bad. We´ve made a big step forward, but we´ve had a bit of everything so far. Hopefully Le Mans was the start for us; I don´t know where a victory will come, but with a good team and a good bike I think that it is possible.´

Smith had come down to the Circuit de Catalunya with the intention of combining attendance at the CEV Buckler with some intensive bicycle training in the Pyrenees, the mountain range dividing Spain and neighbouring France.
