Espargaro opens wet and wild Mugello practice schedule on top

Pol Espargaro was the quickest out of the blocks in the first 125cc practice session in Mugello, the Italian circuit hit by a downpour five minutes before its commencement.

If the grey clouds and prior weather forecasts were not indication enough of wet conditions in Mugello, a quick glance at the 125cc Free Practice timesheet would quickly point observers in the right direction. A top ten headed by aquaphiles Pol Espargaro and Gabor Talmacsi, and times some way down on the circuit record, were the giveaway clues.

Belson Derbi rider Espargaro was the early frontrunner in the lower cylinder category, with a 2´15.341 lap of the Italian circuit. The Spaniard was some four-tenths of a second quicker than anything reigning World Champion Talmacsi could muster, whilst third placed Michael Ranseder was a further 1.4 seconds down on the pacesetting duo.

A notable opening session was enjoyed by wildcard Lorenzo Savadori, in fourth place on his maiden outing. The Italian former Red Bull MotoGP Rookie was the fastest Italian in the class.

De Graaf Aprilia rider Danny Webb, I.C. Team´s Shanghai wet race winner Andrea Iannone, perennial poleman Bradley Smith and American Stevie Bonsey also featured in the top ten, ahead of series leader Mike di Meglio and Joan Olive. Di Meglio suffered a crash in the session, atypical in such conditions for the wet weather maestro.
