Bautista bites back in final 250cc Mugello practice

Alvaro Bautista upped his preparations for the second 250cc qualifying session with the fastest time in the final practice run.

Alvaro Bautista prepared for the second 250cc qualifying session with a spirited morning run at Mugello, riding a 1´54.207 fastest lap onboard his Mapfre Aspar Aprilia bike. The Spaniard´s time came on his final lap of the session, holding off a late push from home rider Manuel Poggiali.

Campetella Racing rider Poggiali was less than a tenth of a second slower than Bautista, who had crashed yesterday afternoon seemingly without any ill-effect. Marco Simoncelli was third quickest, having challenged for pole position on Friday.

Team Toth Aprilia´s Hector Barbera, Le Mans race winner Alex Debon, 250cc rookie Lukas Pesek and former 125cc World Champion Thomas Luthi were all within half a second of Bautista´s marker, all on Aprilia machinery at the factory´s home race. World Championship leader Mika Kallio and teammate Hiroshi Aoyama were the highest placing KTM riders, in eighth and ninth respectively.

Polaris World´s provisional poleman Mattia Pasini rounded off the top ten, looking to confirm the quarter litre top spot in just a few hours time.
