Home pole marks first Rossi-Bridgestone qualifying top spot

Tyre manufacturers Bridgestone were understandably delighted with Valentino Rossi´s first pole position with their rubber, as Hiroshi Yamada explained after the qualifying session.

A first pole position of the year for the Rossi-Bridgestone combination and the sum of its parts left the Japanese tyre manufacturer in high spirits on Saturday afternoon, with Hiroshi Yamada from Bridgestone pleased with the general qualifying performance.

`We´re very happy with this position; our first pole of the year and also third place with Loris Capirossi,´ said the Bridgestone chief after seeing Rossi end the Michelin dominant run of the opening five races. It was a view shared by Davide Brivio, the Italian´s Manager in the Fiat Yamaha team.

`It´s something special to get this first pole with Bridgestone in Mugello. Our target now is to keep our momentum for the race; we´re very happy but we know that it´s only Saturday,´ warned Brivio. Bridgestone must now provide Rossi with the same standard of rubber that has enabled him to win at the past two rounds in Shanghai and Le Mans, as the five-time MotoGP World Champion looks for his seventh consecutive Mugello victory.

`We used something new with the qualifiers. They have improved with every race but today they worked very well. We also tried some race simulations in the afternoon here, and I think that in these conditions we have a good race tyre for nearly everybody,´ concluded Yamada, indicating that Rossi´s Michelin-shod rivals may have a tough task ahead of them.
