Smith unsure of hand injury recovery timescale

Fifth in Mugello, Bradley Smith played through the pain of a throttle hand injury to add to his points tally.

Brad Pitt was in attendance at the Gran Premio d´Italia Alice to take in the action on the MotoGP grid, but the World Championship´s own `Mr Smith´ had already starred in the series´ action thriller just a few hours earlier. Polaris World Aprilia rider Bradley Smith was once again up with the frontrunners at Mugello, eventually taking fifth place in an extremely close 125cc race.

The Briton was leading the way at the end of the penultimate lap in Italy, but was swamped by four riders as Simone Corsi made an audacious pass. The 17 year-old was not too disheartened with the finish, coming as it did less than 24 hours after incurring both a fractured metatarsal and wrist contusion in a Saturday qualifying crash.

`I´m happy with fifth place, considering that there was a chance that I wouldn´t be able to race,´ said Smith, whose season has been a mixture of peaks and valleys in quick succession. He has taken pole position for three of the six races to date, but has only finished 50% of the rounds due to crashes and mechanical problems.

`The broken bone in my foot wasn´t the big problem for me –that was the hand. It's the one that gets used for everything; opening the throttle, braking…it takes a real bashing during a race. It´s also difficult to know what shape we´ll be in for Barcelona, because with ligaments things are never as clear as with a broken bone.´
