A selection of statistics ahead of the MotoGP contest at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday afternoon.

- Casey Stoner starts from pole for the first time since the San Marino Grand Prix last year. Stoner has won on the last three occasions he started on pole – at Laguna Seca, Brno and Misano in 2007.

- Stoner´s pole position lap time is the fastest ever lap of the Catalunya circuit by a motorcycle. The top six riders on the grid have gone faster than the previous pole position record set last year by Valentino Rossi.

- This is the first time that a Ducati rider has started from pole at the Catalunya circuit and it is also the first for Bridgestone.

- Dani Pedrosa (second) starts from the front row for the fifth time in 2008. Since crashing out in Japan last year, Pedrosa has had nine successive top four finishes and has been the first Honda across the line in each of the first six races of this year.

- Nicky Hayden (third) has qualified on the front row for the first time since the final race of 2007 in Valencia.

- For the first time this year there are no Yamaha riders on the front row of the grid.

- Randy de Puniet (fourth) will be starting from his best grid position since he qualified fourth for the final race of last year. De Puniet won the 250cc race at Catalunya in 2003 and 2004.

- Colin Edwards has maintained his record of qualifying in the top five at every race so far in 2008. Edwards is having his best ever start to the season having scored 58 points in the first six races of the year.

- Andrea Dovizioso (seventh) has equalled his previous best qualifying result of the year which he achieved in Portugal. Dovizioso has finished on the podium for the last four years at the Barcelona track competing in the smaller classes, including a win in the 250cc category in 2006.

- Since the introduction of the four-stroke MotoGP formula at the start of 2002, Valentino Rossi (ninth) has never previously qualified lower than fourth on the grid at the Catalunya circuit. Rossi has finished on the podium in all of his eight races at this track in the premier-class, including five victories.
