De Puniet looks for solutions to prevent crashes

Having been unable to finish three races thus far in 2008, another crash for LCR Honda´s fiery Frenchman Randy de Puniet on Sunday meant his tests this week were focussed on preventing more tumbles.

Two days of testing at the Spanish circuit of Montmelo this week gave LCR Honda´s Randy de Puniet a chance to get back on his satellite Honda RC212V after yet another heartbreaking DNF on Sunday, at the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya.

The inconsistent Frenchman crashed out of a MotoGP race for the second weekend in succession at the Barcelona track, on the back of a similar mishap at Mugello, so his Catalunya test sessions on Monday and Tuesday saw him working with his team to rebuild his confidence and find a way to give his 800cc prototype more stability on track.

A healthy best lap time of 1´42.775 on Monday saw De Puniet eighth on a timesheet of 19 riders, while amongst a more depleted field on Tuesday he was fifth fastest, with a best effort of 1'43.039, as he succeeded in making improvements to his machine´s general set-up.

Afterwards, he told, `We tested several things and found some good solutions. I tried to improve the front end feeling because I have had a lot of crashes this year and we don´t know why.´

`I think we are going in a good direction,´ he went on to say. `We were very competitive last weekend and during the test, so I hope to be in good shape for the next GP in England. We have been very fast here, so now we just need to adjust the bike, to make it more secure.´

Asked to summarise his 2008 campaign thus far, De Puniet commented, `It has been very difficult, because it is a new team, with a new bike and new tyres so it has not been easy to find a good set-up. We have had some good races, but here in Barcelona we were very fast and then I had a crash when I was behind the group fighting for the podium, so I need to keep going and make sure I finish races.´
