Simoncelli closing in on Kallio

Simoncelli closing in on Kallio

With the gap in the 250cc World Championship picture rapidly reducing, current form rider Marco Simoncelli is optimistic about his title aspirations.

Marco Simoncelli had promised a title fight with Mika Kallio after his maiden 250cc victory at Mugello, and a phenomenal turnaround in Catalunya certainly aided the Metis Gilera rider´s cause.

A second Simoncelli win in succession added to the Italian´s points tally, but the biggest help came from his Red Bull KTM rival´s mechanical problem and subsequent retirement from the race in Barcelona. After cutting the gap at the top of the World Championship standings to just three points, Simoncelli reviewed a race in which he also capitalised on a mistake by Alvaro Bautista on the final lap.

`I tried to hang on to Alvaro to put some pressure on him,´ explained the 21 year-old. `If he hadn´t have made the mistake then I wouldn´t have caught him. When he went wide I passed him and took the win, which was absolutely fantastic.´

On his immediate rival´s mechanical misfortune, Simoncelli noted the opportunity afforded to him.

`It was the first retirement of the season for Kallio, so it was important for me to win in order to cut his advantage in the championship. Now we have to continue performing like we have been doing, and how I know that we can. In my opinion, we can continue doing well.´
