Tight at the top as 250cc stars head to Britain

Events at the Catalunya round of the 250cc World Championship closed the gap at the top of the standings, making this weekend´s British visit more important than ever.

The 250cc race in Catalunya gave an exciting shakeup to the quarter-litre class, with the title battle heating up. Previously eighteen points clear at the top of the overall classification, Red Bull KTM´s Mika Kallio was dealt a cruel blow with the double hit of a Marco Simoncelli victory and his own mechanical problems cutting the gap between the two to just three points.

Metis Gilera rider Simoncelli has been the revelation of the season, winning the last two races and putting himself into the title mix with a string of podium finishes. The Italian´s latest triumph leapfrogged him above Mattia Pasini and Alex Debon in the standings, the top four separated by a mere fourteen points.

Slightly off the pace, steady form from KTM rider Hiroshi Aoyama (the highest finisher at Donington Park in 2007 still in the class) and Team Toth´s Hector Barbera could also move them into contention. Yuki Takahashi, Mapfre Aspar´s unfortunate World Championship favourite Alvaro Bautista, Thomas Luthi and Julian Simon round off the top ten.
