A new sound echoed off the grandstands on Tuesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as a group of MotoGP test riders took to the 2.62-mile road course for the first official MotoGP outing at the newly laid out track.

Italian rider Niccolo Canepa was quickest on the first day of the historic MotoGP Indianapolis test on Tuesday (1st July), lapping the new layout on his Bridgestone-shod Ducati in a best time of 1´44.176.

`It is a beautiful track,´ Canepa said. `Just this morning, I got to learn the circuit because it´s new for everybody and it was also a little bit dirty, so we had to clean up it up.´

Defending double AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies, from Longview, Texas, was second with a top lap time of 1´44.227, on a Suzuki prototype also equipped with Bridgestone rubber.

Spies put in the most laps of any rider on the day, with 100 in total, his best time coming on his 91st turn. The 23 year-old recently made an earlier than scheduled debut for Rizla Suzuki as a temporary replacement for Loris Capirossi at Donington, and is set for further appearances for the team at Laguna Seca and Indianapolis in the forthcoming GPs at the two prestigious American racetracks.

`I think it´s going to be a good event and I think there´s going to be a lot of people here, so I´m just looking forward to seeing all of the American fans rooting us on,´ Spies said of racing at IMS in September. `I´d love to be in the top ten, or top five, but that´s going to be pretty tough, so if I can get comfortable on the thing, I think we can do reasonably well. I did 100 laps today and I´m probably going to do another 100 tomorrow, so just the more laps, the better for me and try to run with those guys.´

Seven riders combined to record a total of 492 laps under sunny skies and in temperatures in the low 80s, preparing bikes and tyres for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix – which is to take place on the 12th-14th September weekend.
