Dall´Igna comments on Simoncelli machinery upgrade

World Championship front runner Marco Simoncelli appears to be making a smooth transition onto upgraded Gilera machinery at the Sachsenring.

After Metis Gilera´s Marco Simoncelli immediately put his 250cc RSA upgrade to good use on Friday at the Sachsenring, with a 1´23.953 lap giving him provisional pole in the quarter litre class, Piaggio Group boss Gigi dall´Igna explained the reasons behind the upgrade midway through the 2008 season.

Having used an LE model provided by Gilera thus far this year Simoncelli was given a chance to test a factory RSA version of the bike in a two-day post Assen test at Brno and has both versions available this weekend in Germany.

There is unlikely to be any return to the LE prototype following Friday´s results, however, and senior Piaggio Group management hope that Simoncelli can use the new bike to enhance his World title challenge – as he battles with KTM´s Mika Kallio who he trails by just one point in the standings at present.

Technical Director Dall´Igna commented, `Marco is the first rider on Piaggio Group machinery and therefore we have to push to give him the best possible solution to help him win the title.´

The Italian manager continued, `The new machine is definitely better than the old one. The engine and chassis are better as we have more horse power in the engine and the chassis is better for turning, for exiting corners and for braking too.´
