Simoncelli continues stronghold in final 250cc practice

Marco Simoncelli´s late push in the quarter litre session gave him the fastest time of the morning.

250cc provisional poleman for the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, Marco Simoncelli was once again the fastest rider on track ahead of the second qualifying session. The Metis Gilera rider snatched back the top spot on the timing screen from title rival Mika Kallio in the final seconds of the run, with a 1´24.214 lap of the Sachsenring circuit.

Rounding off a Saturday morning in which the remaining two World Championship category leaders returned to the top of the timesheets, Kallio found two tenths of a second in the final 250cc free practice session. The Red Bull KTM rider clocked a 1´24.230 time on his 20th and final lap of the morning, and was only beaten by Simoncelli´s late show and a mere 0.016.

Another provisional front row starter also started strong in the morning run, as Hector Barbera came in third fastest in a top trip separated by just 0.025. Further back but making big steps forward was Alvaro Bautista in fourth –the frequent poleman pencilled in for an eleventh place start after the first qualifying session.

Other riders featuring in the top ten were Julian Simon, Mattia Pasini, Hiroshi Aoyama, Yuki Takahashi, Alex Debon and Roberto Locatelli, all within a second of Simoncelli´s time.
