Simoncelli takes over in final 250cc practice

Provisionally second on the 250cc front row in Japan, Marco Simoncelli recorded the fastest time in the second practice run.

250cc World Championship leader Marco Simoncelli recorded the fastest time of the final quarter-litre category Free Practice session at Motegi, clocking a 1´52.206 lap some six-tenths of a second faster than the provisional pole time. The Metis Gilera rider was just 0.038 quicker than 2005 & 2006 Japanese racewinner and home favourite Hiroshi Aoyama on an extremely compact 250cc timesheet.

Repsol KTM rider Julian Simon was third quickest, himself just over a tenth of a second down on Simoncelli´s marker and edging out Alvaro Bautista and 2007 victor Mika Kallio. All three are out to move onto the front row this afternoon in the second qualifying run.

On the provisional frontline, Hector Barbera was sixth fastest in the morning session, ahead of Aleix Espargaro and provisional poleman Alex Debon. Hector Faubel and Yuki Takahashi –fresh from the announcement of his move to MotoGP for 2009- rounded off the top ten, all of whom went round within a second of top man Simoncelli.
