Smith on top in sunny morning session

Smith on top in sunny morning session

Polaris World´s teenage British rider Bradley Smith set the pace in the 125cc Free Practice run on Saturday morning at the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan.

Having placed himself second on the provisional Motegi grid on Friday Englishman Bradley Smith confirmed his good form ahead of Saturday afternoon qualifying with the fastest time in 125cc Free Practice 2.

The Polaris World competitor, who currently lies seventh in the World Championship standings, achieved the best finish of his rookie season at the Japanese circuit in 2006 and enjoys riding at the Twin Ring track.

Smith´s best effort of 1´58.695 put him at the head of the Saturday morning timesheet by a 0.066s margin, ahead of German rival Sandro Cortese (Emmi - Caffe Latte).

World Championship leader Mike Di Meglio (Ajo Motorsport) was third quickest, with Nicolas Terol (Jack & Jones) and Joan Olive (Belson Derbi) also in the top five.

Stefan Bradl (Grizzly Gas Kiefer Racing), Raffaele de Rosa (Onde 2000 KTM), Simone Corsi (Jack & Jones WRB), Dominique Aegerter (Ajo Motorsport) and Scott Redding (Blusens Aprilia Junior) were all in the top ten, whilst 125cc title holder Gabor Talmacsi (Bancaja Aspar) was eleventh fastest.

After the mixed conditions on Friday the 125cc riders were still getting their bearings at the Japanese venue, with crashes (fortunately without serious consequence) for Corsi, Sergio Gadea, Alexis Masbou, Efren Vazquez, Esteve Rabat, Simone Corsi and Bastien Chesaux.
