Grid facts and figures for 250cc Australian contest

The motogp.com lowdown on the starting grid for Sunday´s 250cc race at Phillip Island.

- Marco Simoncelli has finished on the podium on each of the four previous occasions when he has started from pole in 2008, including two victories.

- Simoncelli´s pole position time is the fastest ever lap of the Phillip Island circuit on a 250cc machine, taking the record from Sebastian Porto´s pole position time in 2004.

- Mika Kallio (second) is starting from his best grid position since he was also the second fastest qualifier at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez.

- Alvaro Bautista, who is starting from the front row for the tenth time in 2008, has finished on the podium at the last seven successive races.

- Hiroshi Aoyama will be aiming for his first podium finish since he was second at the Chinese Grand Prix back in early May.

- Hector Faubel (fifth) is starting from his best ever grid position in the 250cc class. His previous best was sixth at the last race in Japan and also at the Grand Prix of Catalunya in June.

- Julian Simon´s fourth place finish one week ago in Japan is his best result since moving up to the 250cc class at the start of last year.

- If any Aprilia rider finishes on the podium and in front of all the Gilera riders, then Aprilia will clinch the 250cc Constructors title for the eighth time.
