Criville honoured with MotoGP champions trophy

The 1999 World Champion Alex Criville received a special MotoGP champions trophy on Friday at the Ricardo Tormo circuit.

Following similar events in Australia, England, Italy and the United States earlier in the year, as part of the celebrations marking the 60th season of Grand Prix racing, Alex Criville was honoured for his 1999 500cc triumph in a special presentation at the Gran Premio Parts Europe de la Comunitat Valenciana on Friday.

Mr. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna Sports) and Mr. Claude Danis (FIM) handed over a replica World Champion trophy to Criville in acknowledgement of his achievement as the only Spaniard ever to win the premier class title.

Afterwards Criville commented, `I feel very happy to receive this trophy. For me it is unbelievable to have my name up there with riders like Freddie Spencer, Kenny Roberts Snr, Eddie Lawson, Kevin Schwantz and Mick Doohan. It is like a dream.´

Recalling his great rivalry with Doohan, Criville continued, `I remember that he was a very hard rider and it was difficult to beat him. He was very strong, very fast and to be in the same team and to try to beat him was sometimes very difficult. But I am happy looking back, I won 15 races and got more than 50 podiums so I can´t say anything more. I am there, like a champion and it´s fantastic.´
