With one race to go, Jorge Lorenzo and his old foe Andrea Dovizioso have reflected on a great learning year for them both in MotoGP this season.
MotoGP Rookie of the Year candidates Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso reviewed their excellent debut campaigns in the premier class in Thursday´s official pre-event press conference at Valencia.
Only Sunday´s Gran Premio Parts Europe de la Comunitat Valenciana race remains in a long, hard season for the former 250cc rivals, with Lorenzo holding a 21 point advantage over the Italian in the battle for fourth place and the honour of being 2008´s top premier class debutant.
`For us it would be perfect to finish fourth,´ said Lorenzo. `We still don´t have the position because if Andrea wins and I crash it is possible to lose it. It would be strange but it is a possibility. Actually we don´t care if we finish fifth in the standings, but it is important to finish on the podium or in the top five in the last race.´
Reflecting on his sensational first year in MotoGP, which has yielded four pole positions, six podium finishes and a race victory, Lorenzo commented, `It was quite easy at the beginning because we had good tyres, a good bike and the other riders had some difficulties. Then in the middle of the season the situation changed and it was the opposite, we had the difficulties and the other riders went fast. So next year I think we will change things and we will have to work hard to be faster.
For his part, Dovizioso looked ahead to his move to Repsol Honda for 2009 and stated his satisfaction with this year´s work. `I´m really happy about this season because we have gathered a lot of experience and I think I am ready to go into a factory team,´ revealed the former 125cc World Champion. `I want to work, especially on the bike, because when you are in a satellite team you cannot improve the bike. Next year will be very difficult for me because it will be the first time that I have worked on a bike.´
`Anyway, I am happy about things because fifth place this year is quite good and I was pleased to get the third position last week in Malaysia,´ continued Dovizioso. `Especially because that track is really nice for me. I don´t love this track here at Valencia but we were quite fast in the last race and on Monday I will try my new bike and new tyres so that will be a big challenge.´
