Rossi left with more work to do after Friday crash

Valentino Rossi suffered a tumble on Friday afternoon at Valencia, losing time in free practice, but he was unhurt and will go in search of increased pace on Saturday.

The opening day of action at the Gran Premio Parts Europe de la Comunitat Valenciana saw numerous riders in all three categories suffer accidents in the slippery wet conditions at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, with eight-time World Champion Valentino Rossi amongst the crashers.

In truth his mishap was fortunately not of a serious nature, but was indicative of the lack of grip which hindered his progress as the day progressed. The legendary Italian ended up fourth on the timesheet behind Repsol Honda pair Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa and his teammate Jorge Lorenzo.

`I was lucky because it was a soft crash,´ said the Fiat Yamaha man. `I was going very slowly. We tried to modify the setting to try and improve our performance but I had some problems on that corner, losing the rear on entry. It was just a small slide though, so no problem. I lost some time but that is normal.´

`We have to work quite a lot because the condition is very bad,´ continued Rossi. `It is cold and the track does not have any grip so it is difficult to control the bike. Anyway, I am not far from the top, in fourth position, just two tenths off the pace and tomorrow I hope to make things better.´

Rossi´s Team Manager Davide Brivio summed the day up saying, `This morning the rain was very heavy and we only did a few laps. This afternoon it was better weather so that´s when we really started working, in what were reasonably wet but not soaking conditions. Things weren´t so bad and Valentino was up there with the fastest riders, but we definitely have a bit more work to do.´

`He had a small crash when he lost rear grip at the last corner and slid off, but it was very slow and he wasn´t hurt. It seems that it´s likely that this weather is going to continue, unfortunately, so now we need to put together all the information we gathered today and continue to improve things tomorrow.´

At the conclusion of Friday´s action Rossi was presented with the `Hero of Marca´ award by the Marca newspaper in acknowledgement of his superb 2008 World Championship win.
